Queribus, the last bastion of Cathare resistance, became a royal frontier fortress in the thirteenth century in the reign of St. Louis.
It stands on a crag at a height of 2700 ft upon the ridge which once guarded the frontier with Aragon, and offers spectacular views down to the mediterranean and the Pyrenees.
Its remarkable state of conservation offers glimpses of everyday life in a medieval fortress (cisterns for water storage, the residential building) and of medieval siege warfare (loop holes, battlements, and the « assommoir » : a design feature allowing differents missiles to be poured down on the heads of any assailants)
